Best Time to Visit Chobe National Park: Month-by-Month Guide
When Is the Best Time to Visit Chobe National Park?
The best time to visit Chobe National Park for wildlife viewing is May to October, the dry season, when elephants and other wildlife concentrate along the Chobe River in their thousands and game viewing reaches its annual peak. The green season (November–April) offers lush scenery, excellent birding, and lower rates — but wildlife is more dispersed and the extraordinary elephant spectacle of the dry season is absent.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
May–June: Early Dry Season (Excellent)
Temperatures cool pleasantly (15–28°C), vegetation begins to thin, and wildlife starts concentrating at the river. May and June are excellent for photography — golden morning light, no heat haze, and rapidly improving elephant numbers at the riverfront. This is also the beginning of the Savuti predator season as prey becomes easier to find in thinning bush.
July–August: Peak Dry Season (Best Overall)
Peak wildlife viewing. Elephant concentrations at the Chobe River reach their maximum. Afternoon boat safaris with 500+ elephants drinking simultaneously are documented regularly. Mornings are cold (8–12°C at sunrise — warm clothing required for open game drive vehicles). Accommodation at top lodges must be booked 6–12 months in advance.
September–October: Late Dry Season (Exceptional Wildlife, Extreme Heat)
The “suicide months” — temperatures 35–42°C. Wildlife concentration remains exceptional as water is at its most limited. Elephants spend extended periods in the Chobe River cooling off, producing extraordinary swimming sequences. The extreme heat is the trade-off; early morning and late afternoon activities are comfortable, but midday is brutal.
November–December: Green Season Onset
First rains arrive in late October/November. Wildlife disperses as temporary water appears. Accommodation rates drop 15–25%. The Savuti zebra migration begins. Carmine bee-eater colonies (one of Botswana’s great birding spectacles) are at their peak October–December on the Chobe riverbanks.
January–April: Green Season
Lush green landscape, excellent birding (European migrants present), lower tourist volumes. Elephant viewing is still good but the dramatic riverfront concentrations don’t occur. Savuti’s Linyanti area can become partially inaccessible due to flooding.
