Chobe National Park Self-Drive: Is It Possible and Is It Worth It?

Can You Self-Drive in Chobe National Park?

Yes — Chobe National Park has a self-drive road network on the Chobe riverfront, allowing independent visitors in their own 4WD vehicles to explore approximately 40 km of river road between Sedudu Gate (near Kasane) and Ngoma Gate. This makes Chobe one of the few premier northern Botswana parks accessible without a guided lodge stay — though the experience is fundamentally different from guided safaris, and the boat safari component (which often produces the best wildlife viewing) is not available for self-drivers.

Self-Drive Chobe: What’s Available

  • The Chobe River Drive: The main self-drive road runs along the Chobe River, offering excellent elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and bird viewing from your vehicle. This is the same road used by lodge game drives.
  • Savuti and Linyanti: These interior areas are accessible by self-drive 4WD but require experience with sandy tracks and remote driving. Distances are significant, fuel and water must be carried, and navigation requires a good map/GPS. Not recommended for first-time Africa self-drivers.

Self-Drive Practicalities

  • Vehicle: 4WD strongly recommended — some sections of the riverfront road can be sandy or muddy. Standard vehicles can manage the main river road in the dry season.
  • Rental: 4WD rentals available in Kasane. Maun-based rental companies also offer Chobe-capable vehicles.
  • Park fees: Paid at Sedudu or Ngoma gate. BWP 120 per person per day (~USD 9) + vehicle fee.
  • Accommodation: Campsites within the park are bookable through Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Kasane has several lodge and guesthouse options outside the park boundary.
