Chobe National Park vs Okavango Delta: Which Botswana Safari Is Better?
Chobe vs Okavango Delta — Which Should You Choose?
Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta are Botswana’s two flagship safari destinations — but they deliver fundamentally different experiences. Chobe is defined by scale: it contains Africa’s largest elephant population and offers the most accessible big-game viewing in southern Africa along its famous riverfront. The Okavango Delta is defined by uniqueness: an inland water wilderness offering mokoro, boat safaris, and the world’s best wild dog habitat. Most serious Botswana travellers do both.
Chobe National Park: What Makes It Special
- Elephants: The Chobe riverfront hosts the highest elephant concentration in Africa — over 50,000 elephants in the Chobe ecosystem, with herds of 500+ regularly seen drinking at the river. No other destination offers this density of elephant viewing.
- Boat safaris: The Chobe River allows boat safaris that bring guests within metres of elephants swimming, hippos wallowing, crocodiles basking, and hundreds of birds — an entirely different perspective from land-based game drives.
- Accessibility: Kasane, the gateway town for Chobe, is served by daily flights from Johannesburg and is the most accessible major safari destination in Botswana. A Chobe day trip from Victoria Falls (45 minutes by road) is possible — though staying overnight is strongly recommended.
- Lion and leopard: Chobe’s lion population follows the elephant herds and concentrates around the river. Leopard are present in the Savuti area (southern Chobe) — one of Africa’s premier big cat destinations.
- Savuti: The southern Chobe district contains the Savuti Channel area, famous for its lion-elephant confrontations and exceptional dry-season predator activity.
Okavango Delta: What Makes It Special
- Water-based safari: Mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) and motorboat safaris through papyrus channels — impossible at Chobe
- Wild dog: Moremi Game Reserve (within the delta) is one of Africa’s top wild dog destinations
- Exclusivity: Remote fly-in camps with extremely low visitor density
- Ecosystem diversity: Floodplain, woodland, and water habitats in one area
- UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Classic Botswana Circuit: Do Both
The standard luxury Botswana itinerary combines 3 nights in Chobe with 4 nights in the Okavango Delta, connected by a charter flight (approximately 1.5 hours). This covers the Chobe elephants and river experience, then the delta’s water safari and wild dog viewing — two completely different ecosystems in one trip. Many itineraries add Victoria Falls (1–2 nights) at the start or end.
