How to Get to Chobe National Park: Flights, Routes and Transfers

How Do You Get to Chobe National Park?

The easiest way to reach Chobe National Park is to fly into Kasane Airport (BBK) in northern Botswana, which has daily connections from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo (via Airlink) and from Maun (via charter). Kasane is the gateway town for Chobe’s riverfront area and is 5 km from the park entrance. Alternatively, Chobe is just 75 km from Victoria Falls — making it one of the most accessible major safari destinations in southern Africa, often combined as a day trip or overnight extension.

Option 1: Fly to Kasane (Recommended)

  • Kasane Airport (BBK) — Served by Airlink from Johannesburg OR Tambo (daily, approximately 2 hours). Also accessible by charter from Maun, Livingstone, and other regional hubs.
  • Flight cost: approximately USD 250–400 per person one-way from Johannesburg
  • Transfer from Kasane Airport to riverfront lodges: 10–15 minutes

Option 2: From Victoria Falls (Road or Boat)

Chobe is just 75 km from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (or Livingstone, Zambia) — one of Africa’s great safari combinations:

  • By road from Victoria Falls: 75 km, approximately 1.5 hours including border crossing at Kazungula. The road is tarred and well-maintained. Requires crossing into Botswana — Botswana visa required (free for most nationalities on arrival).
  • Kazungula Ferry: A vehicle ferry crosses the Zambezi River between Zambia and Botswana at Kazungula. A new fixed bridge (Kazungula Bridge) now also connects the two countries.
  • Day trip by boat: Several operators in Victoria Falls offer full-day Chobe day trips including boat safari and lunch. A worthwhile addition to any Victoria Falls visit but an overnight stay is strongly recommended.

Botswana Entry Requirements

  • Visa: Citizens of most Western countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, NZ, South Africa) enter Botswana visa-free for up to 90 days. Check current requirements for your nationality.
  • Yellow fever: Required only if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Not required for most Western travellers arriving directly.
  • Currency: Botswana Pula (BWP). Most lodges operate in USD. ATMs available in Kasane.

Getting Around Within Chobe

All game drives within Chobe National Park must use a licensed guide — self-drive is not permitted on the Chobe riverfront road (though some areas allow self-drive). All reputable lodges include guided game drives and boat safaris in their all-inclusive rates. Charter flights connect Kasane (riverfront) to Savuti and Linyanti airstrips for those doing multi-camp Chobe itineraries.
